College Students and AI: Are Businesses Still Hiring College Grads?

By Elizabeth West (BA 26)

The topic of college students and AI has become one of the most pressing questions facing graduates entering today’s job market. writes, 鈥42% of college-eligible students say that artificial intelligence will influence which career they pursue, and 10 percent report that they have already changed their planned major due to concerns about AI, according to a 鈥 by EAB.

It鈥檚 generally believed that some careers, like surgeon or CEO, are safe from AI. But how does AI affect college students who are seeking entry-level jobs?

Our local businesses have experienced the changes surrounding college students and AI firsthand. How are they handling this technology?

Are Businesses Still Hiring College Grads?

How is AI impacting your hiring process?

For a graphic design company based in Winona Lake and Warsaw, Indiana, the hiring process has stayed the same concerning college students and AI.

鈥淎I may replace designers that lean too heavily on speed, trends, and templates, but, at this point, it is not replacing designers that understand strategy and creative thinking,鈥 said Aaron Winey, head of . 鈥淎I is a tool that designers are expected to use, but in time, I anticipate public perception will swing away from seeing AI tools as replacements for hiring a designer.鈥

Even as AI becomes a prominent tool, Blue Note values those who demonstrate creative thinking, the ability to follow instructions, attention to detail, and a clear understanding of design concepts can find a job.聽

At , an orthopedic medical technology company, AI plays a part in onboarding new employees rather than replacing entry-level positions.

鈥淭here’s always going to be a learning curve when joining a company,鈥 said Tony Stewart,聽 global marketing leader at DePuy Synthes. 鈥淎nd AI鈥檚 overall role is to help reduce that learning curve for individuals.鈥

Stewart stated that, while AI is an efficient resource used on a daily basis for tasks such as data analysis and synthesis, presentation creation, and other jobs, AI has not eliminated entry-level positions in his department.

Team members at the marketing company also shared their experiences on how AI impacts their business.

鈥淭he people seeing the greatest success with AI are those who already possess the knowledge, vision, and experience to direct it effectively. Without a clear creative vision, the nuance, intentionality, and details that give a project its unique voice are often lost, said Andrew Palladino, cinematographer and editor at Dream On Studios. 鈥淭he role of the filmmaker is not being replaced by AI. Filmmakers must learn how to incorporate AI into their workflow in ways that enhance their creativity, improve efficiency, and ultimately tell better stories. AI can be a powerful tool, but the vision, judgment, and authenticity that resonate with audiences still come from the filmmaker.鈥

Do businesses still look for candidates with an undergraduate degree?

鈥淲hen hiring in the design world, portfolio is king,鈥 said Winey. 鈥淎n undergraduate degree is necessary for most people to develop skills and work towards an entry-level professional portfolio in a structured learning environment. If someone is able to develop a portfolio that shows a high level of skill outside of college, then they are also a competitive candidate.鈥

At DePuy, Stewart says they are still looking for college graduates: 鈥淐andidates in the past have often studied anatomy, physical therapy, or one of the sciences before coming here. AI is just an added skill that they should know before they come to work here. AI is not replacing the need for talented people.鈥

AI might improve a resume鈥檚 appearance, but it cannot offer authenticity or guarantee a successful job interview. At Dream On Studios, Alexis Grant, Chief Operations Officer, said that she looks for authenticity and experience when hiring. While a degree can be helpful, she believes that experience is important in the marketing industry.聽

鈥淚 hire based on the idea of the 4 C’s of hiring 鈥 Character, Competency, Chemistry, and Calling,鈥 explained Grant. 鈥淚 don’t look for a degree over real-life experience. Personal and professional recommendations have more value to me over a diploma, if someone can testify to the quality of your work and character.鈥澛

If you鈥檙e on track to get a college degree, look for a school that gives you hands-on opportunities to showcase your work to future employers. At Grace, every student completes an internship related to their area of study, and many majors require practicums and capstones that provide students with real work to showcase in job interviews.聽

If you鈥檙e concerned about the price tag of higher education, read our blog, Is the Cost of College Worth It? AI can be a useful tool, but it can鈥檛 replace human judgment and talent. College will not only teach you how to use this technology effectively but will also equip you with the knowledge to create on your own and use artificial intelligence ethically. Grace鈥檚 programs ensure you鈥檒l develop professional skills 鈥 sometimes more quickly than simply jumping into the workforce 鈥 and become a valuable team member in preparation for your future career. These skills won鈥檛 become obsolete, no matter how well-trained AI might be over time.聽

What advice would you give current college students to make themselves more competitive in an AI-influenced job market?

As the relationship between college students and AI is projected to grow, our group of experts offered practical advice for staying ahead.

鈥AI is a wonderful, time-saving tool for designers, but it cannot think or be creative for you,鈥 shared Winey. 鈥淚nstead, work towards developing a portfolio that shows a variety of skills, and learn AI as an asset in the process, not a replacement for the process.鈥

Anabelle LeBlanc, the social media manager at Dream On Studios, offered similar advice for marketing: 鈥淚’d encourage students to get comfortable using AI now. Your competitive advantage isn’t avoiding AI. It’s knowing how to use it to work smarter while also recognizing where it doesn’t belong.鈥

Stewart offers an optimistic view for college graduates. Instead of fearing whether AI will overtake your career plans, learn the technology properly to set yourself apart from other employees or job candidates.聽

鈥淏e curious. Play around with AI,鈥 said Stewart. 鈥淭his is the perfect time for college students coming in, because there are a lot of seasoned employees who don't want to deal with AI. Knowing how to utilize AI will allow graduates to have a leg up.鈥

In the writing world, David Sloane from the Times Union in Warsaw, Indiana, maintains that writing is a craft that 鈥渟hould not be abandoned.鈥

鈥淎I will likely have a strong influence on future journalists,鈥 said Sloane. 鈥淭he more experience and expertise a journalist can have, the better for them. Hopefully, writers will continue to write their own stories and not rely solely on AI.鈥

Lead editor and production manager Mike Deuel at Dream On Studios offers his take on the future of videography, college students, and AI:

鈥淎I is already changing many aspects of video production, from editing and color correction to script assistance and visual effects. As these tools become more advanced, employers will increasingly look for candidates who know how to work alongside AI rather than compete with it,鈥 said Deuel. 鈥淗owever, while AI may automate some routine tasks, the most valuable skills will continue to be creativity, communication, problem-solving, and the ability to adapt as technology evolves.鈥

How Can I Get Hired After College?

It鈥檚 true that AI is changing job descriptions, in some fields more than others. But according to these employers, it cannot replace human skill, judgment, and creativity.聽

Your college degree is worth it! AI is a tool to enhance your education, not a substitute. When it comes to college students and AI, a degree鈥檚 value isn鈥檛 about competing with AI efficiency, but rather about developing the human judgment that AI will never have. The competencies and character you gain in school will still set you apart when pursuing a career.

Here are a few things to think about as you move forward:聽

  • Pick a school that gives you practical experience and a strong ethical foundation
  • Develop a basic understanding of when and how AI should be used in your field (Your education at Grace can help you with that!)
  • Prioritize human connection and content, then use AI as a tool to improve that content
  • Do everything for the glory of God (Colossians 3:23)

Remember Stewart鈥檚 reassurance that all industries will always need 鈥渢alented people,鈥 regardless of AI鈥檚 role in the future. Work hard and hone your abilities. Remember that a person is evaluated for a job not only on what they know but also on their character. An undergraduate degree will make you an asset in the business world for your insight, creativity, and ability to craft content that correlates with reality.聽
